From Young and Old to Green & Gold:

Recipients of Annual Citizenship Awards

Council held its Annual Citizenship Awards this week with 25 people recognised for their outstanding contribution to the Lane Cove community and/or their chosen field.

This year there were a number of young achievers recognised in categories such as Music, Art & Culture and Sport.

In December 2013, Jarryd Hughes took out the SnowBoard Cross World Cup held in Lake Louise, Canada securing his maiden victory and the World Number 1 ranking. The Lane Cove Council Sports Award recipient then went on to represent Australia at Sochi.

Young Achiever recipient Gabriel Gregory not only achieved the highest ATAR score in his HSC last year, he was also Dux of Sydney Grammar School taking out six State ranks and participating in a number of extra-curricular activities.

James Ephraums was the first student at St Ignatius’ College to be Music Captain for more than one year; has been a member of the Sydney Youth Orchestra since 2012; and has performed as a soloist with the internationally-acclaimed opera singer Amelia Farrugia who has worked regularly as a featured soloist for The Metropolitan Opera in New York. James received the Arts, Music & Culture Award at the Citizenship Awards evening held on Wednesday 4 June.

Councillor Brooks-Horn, Mayor of Lane Cove opened the proceedings that saw nine Councillors presenting Awards across 11 categories.

The evening culminated in the announcement of Lyndall McNally as the recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award for 2013. Lyndall has worked tirelessly as the President of Lane Cove Youth Orchestra for more than 15 years and is an active member on a number of local committees including Council’s Cameraygal Festival Committee.

Upon announcing the Award, Mayor Brooks-Horn said, “Lyndall has been an energetic, enthusiastic and dynamic member of the community, offering hundreds of young local musicians a chance to be part of something special. Her generosity extends to the whole Lane Cove communityand what she continues to achieve through the Youth Orchestra is remarkable”.

100 people were in attendance at the presentation evening to hear the announcement of the Awards.

Leadership and Community Service again proved to be popular categories reflecting the strong community spirit of Lane Cove. Recipients included Taekwondo leader Fabian Peters who created an anti-bullying app and helped students raise funds for one of their peers who was diagnosed with Leukemia; Linley Point Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator Greg Griffiths who has actively helped to reduce crime; 89 year old Peter Bright who has tended to the gardens at Lane Cove Bowling Club for some 30 years; and Frances de Jong who helps to run the St Michael’s Garage Sale which last celebrated its 10th year and highest fundraising result to date.
